UK flight restrictions lifted but passengers still face delay

Flight restrictions have been lifted at UK airports after a change in wind direction blew the volcanic ash cloud away from Britain but passengers still face heavy disruption to their travel plans.

After a weekend that saw thousands stranded, passengers have been advised to check with their airline before travelling. A spokesman for Liverpool John Lennon airport said: “Just because the restriction is lifted doesn’t mean the flights are back on.”

Only Shetland and Orkney airports in Scotland remain closed for flights.

Meanwhile, new rules to allow aircraft to fly at higher ash densities have been agreed and will operate from Tuesday.
