Topless travellers bring Darwin development work to a standstill

A war of words has broken out between scantily clad backpackers and tradies working on Darwin’s Waterfront development.

The Northern Territory News reports topless backpackers are distracting workers and slowing progress on the building site. The Waterfront’s new beach and lagoon has become a favourite with backpackers since it opened in April.

In a row quickly dubbed Watergape, some backpackers have complained about workers perving on them while they sunbathe. But the tradies have hit back, claiming it is the backpackers who are trying to grab their attention.

“They ask for it,” said one enlightened worker.

  2. I suggest we send Martin Lane to Darwin to investigate this upsetting behaviour and report back next newsletter.

  4. It still surprises me how women who take their clothes off in public complain about men staring at them. What do they think is going to happen? It’s pretty hard to outline what constitutes acceptable behaviour here. I mean, if it’s acceptable to expose your breasts in public, surely it’s acceptable for others to look at them (hell, I’m a straight female and I can’t help but look). Sure, there’s a difference between subtle glances and sustained leering but the latter isn’t actually illegal. So, in the spirit of making public life more comfortable for everyone: Don’t like guys ogling your naked breasts? Put your top back on.

  6. Well I agree with Gardner, send Mr Lane there for a ‘current affair’ style of report. Also, I for one am particularly perplexed at the rules from state to state. Just yesterday I went topless at our lagoon here in Cairns, and was asked by everyone to put it back on~! Go figure.
