TNT and Oz Ex team up to make backpackers aware of workers’ rights
TNT Magazine and Oz Experience have teamed up to make sure backpackers are aware of their workplace rights following a spate of negative stories in the mainstream press.
TNT features an article this week outlining workers’ rights including the national minimum wage, pay loading, piece rates and meal break entitlements as well as handy hints for coping with high temperatures out in the fruitpicking fields. The article will be laminated and distributed on all Oz Experience buses and will also be reproduced in TNT’s annual Independent Travellers’ Guide next year.
Meanwhile, the Backpacker Tourism Advisory Panel (BTAP) has also been in contact with Queensland member for Burnett Rob Messenger, who pledged his support for industry efforts to protect backpackers.
He said: “I know that my farmers, business owners and ordinary families really appreciate the overseas visitors who choose to visit our community. We want to make them welcome and keep them safe and happy while they are here. There is a facility on my website for people to send me a message. If there are any problems that backpackers experience, then I’d be happy to advocate for and help them out.”
