- Wicked Campers’ problems could be the start of a crackdown on backpacker car rental companies nationwide
  
  Wicked Campers is back in the news after claims in the national media that the majority of its Queensland fleet has been withdrawn over safety concerns. Wicked owner John Webb has refuted the claims, stating only around 50 of the company’s Queensland-registered vehicles have been voluntarily removed from service with 611 still on the road.   The world famous King’s Cross Car Market that operated since 1991 from the King’s Cross Car park is sadly no longer. The old car market was an institution, a place where backpackers would arrive with the most amazing array of Aussie automotive buckets you were ever likely to see in one place. Good cars, cheap cars, outrageously over-priced cars, cars full of camping gear and outdoor gadgetry, cars on their last legs, cars that entered and never left, vans, bloody Kombi Vans, 4×4’s, and lots of Ford Falcon Stationwagons.

  Okay, it’s been a tough year, but it could have been worse. Imagine if you ran a business where the average yield was up 12 per cent to $6171, but the number of customers you’d welcomed through your doors had fallen by 10,000. That’s snow way to behave

Guests at the recent Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards were given a crash course in formal wear, backpacker style, when staff from Thredbo YHA turned up in snowman suits.
Canberra Tourism Awards 09 (2) The hostel’s Kris Laird and Cybele Lemos (pictured with Tourism Snowy Mountains Executive Officer Jo Larkin) soon zipped down to reveal formal dress underneath, but it wasn’t long before the suits were back on as they joined YHA NSW CEO Julian Ledger on stage as he accepted Thredbo’s award for Best Backpacker Accommodation.

The first time nominees were up against extremely tough competition in 2008 winners Canberra City YHA, and will now go head to head with Sydney Central, Perth City, Melbourne Metro and Lakeside Manor YHAs at the Australian Tourism Awards to be held in Hobart in February 2010.
