Tasmanian restaurant cough up over $22k in unpaid wages

The Fair Work Ombudsman is urging young employees to ensure they are paid correctly after an owner of a Tasmanian restaurant was found to have underpaid staff more than $22,000.  

The restaurant was investigated after an employee approached the Fair Work Ombudsman with concerns she was being underpaid, reported Hospitality Magazine.

An audit was conducted and found $22,228 had not been paid to a total of 130 staff. The employer, who claimed he had sought advice from an industrial relations consultant to arrange the employees ‘ collective agreement, said he would voluntarily pay all employees affected.

The claimant, a casual worker at the restaurant, was found to not have received her entitled 20 per cent loading and was owed $68.59.
