Tasmania tourism budget slashed despite a drop in backpacker numbers
Tasmania’s tourism budget has been slashed by $4.3million despite latest figures from Tourism Research Australia showing it as the only state in the country to experience a decline in backpacker numbers.
As Thumbrella reported yesterday, Tourism Research Australia’s International Visitor Survey showed Tasmania had 4,000 fewer backpacker visitors for the year ending March 31, 2009 compared to the previous year.
However, Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Daniel Hanna said the state is the only one in the country to cut spending on marketing and promotion. The Tasmanian Government is predicting moderate growth in visitor numbers during the next financial year, but will still cut the budget back to $28.5 million.
Meanwhile, Tourism Tasmania has appointed Whybin/TBWA Melbourne for its $1.4m advertising contract – and fired the starting gun on a search for a media agency.
