Study suggests Aussies favour international travel over domestic

More Australians are leaning towards international travel rather than taking their holidays domestically, a new study from Roy Morgan Research has shown.

Jane Ianniello, international director tourism, travel and leisure for the company said operators are going to have to work harder and smarter to retain domestic travellers, according to Travel Today.

The survey of 20,000 Australians found 19 per cent had travelled overseas in the last 12 months, which was a seven per cent increase on nine years ago. Those planning to travel abroad had jumped almost 3 per cent to 7.1.

Domestic holidays in the last twelve months among those surveyed, slipped by 4 per cent compared to 2004.

According to the survey, attributing factors to the trend include the desire to seek new experiences and cultures with the under-35s proving an especially difficult market to attract to domestic destinations.
