Reliance of rural communities on backpacker workers highlighted by the ABC

The importance of backpackers to rural economies was underlined by an item on The 7.30 Report last night.

ABC reporter Paul Lockyer visited remote communities in Central Australia which have come to rely on young international travellers to perform seasonal harvest work and without whom many local businesses would be unable to survive.

The item highlights the difficulties such communities have in recruiting Australians due to their isolation and basic living conditions, a problem a conveyor belt of backpackers are happy to solve.

Lockyer concludes: “Once they’re cashed up they quickly move on. But fortunately, there’s always other adventurist travellers willing to give it a go in the Outback.”
