Outback NSW benefits from increased visitor numbers

Far west New South Wales has benefited from an 18 per cent increase in tourist numbers, seeing an estimated $254 million injected into the local economy, the Outback Regional Tourism Organisation has said.

From September 2008 to September 2009 over 650,000 visited the region equaling 18 per cent growth.

Outback Regional Tourism Organisation executive manager Lori Modde said, “It’s great having increased visitors but if they stay longer that means there’s more money being injected into the local economy, and it’s great news for outback NSW.”

An official tour along the Darling River from Walgett to Wentworth last March was conducted by the organisation to encourage more travellers to the region.

“All the marketing and all the efforts that everyone is doing together is making a louder noise,” Modde said.

  2. Great to see that Outback NSW is getting a bigger share of the cake. Not before time. For too many years the TNSW ‘ivory towers’ crowd was Sydneycentric, not interested in promoting the NSW Outback — ask the guys at Broken Hill, who preferred to throw in their lot with SATC to get the mileage they deserved in the international market.
