New standards for travel advertising
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has issued an updated version of its Price advertising and the travel industry guide in light of recent changes to the Trade Practices Act.
Under the act, businesses must ensure advertising is accurate, including the price and any inclusions or exclusions.
The ACCC website warns: “This applies equally to all types of travel, from a five-star luxury holiday to a budget backpacker travel package, and to its total cost, so consumers can make informed purchasing decisions when organising their travel and holiday arrangements.”
In March, Backpacker Trade News reported the ACCC was performing another round of checks on backpacker advertising in the latest phase of its crackdown on the sector. Assistant Director Shannon Murphy said an initial audit raised a number of concerns, mainly about pricing, which had been raised with transgressors and apparently dealt with.
However, she added while proofs of new adverts had been sent to the ACCC for approval, it would now be checking backpacker advertising to ensure the approved artwork was still being used.
