Internet bookings on the rise but most ground product still booked locally

Tourism Australia Manager Industry Development Dawn Howell has said internet bookings from the youth market reveal inbound operators still have all to play for when guests land in Australia.

Speaking at a BTAP/Backpacking Queensland forum in Brisbane last week, Howell said while International Visitor Survey statistics show significant numbers of the youth market books items such as airfares and accommodation over the internet, tours, car rental, road transport and events are far more likely to be booked locally.

She told delegates: “These 15 to 29-year-olds are not actually booking their ground product until they get to Australia and that represents an opportunity for you all.”
