International student support service opens in Melbourne

A support centre and 24-hour helpline has been set up in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton as a welfare service for international students.

Following a spate of attacks on students in Melbourne over the last several months, the International Student Care Service (ISCS) has been set up as part of the Brumby government’s $14 million Action Plan for International Education.

The service provides a point of contact for students in times of emergency, as well as for those seeking crisis accommodation, food aid and other welfare services.

The support centre will be open during business hours while the helpline is manned around the clock.

“We understand there are student concerns about well-being and safety and that is why we invested $14 million in our Action Plan for International Education,” said Victorian premier John Brumby.

Good start, may have been useful from twenty years ago…… still poses question, what have institutions been doing in all this time regarding student welfare, as required under the ESOS Act?
