Hostelworld Hoscar winners announced

Australian hostel owners and managers are celebrating after recording a number of successes at Monday night’s eighth annual Hoscar awards ceremony in Dublin.

The Hoscars are voted for by one million Hostelworld.com customers worldwide, with more than 23,000 properties eligible.

Sydney Central YHA was voted best hostel in Australia and runner-up to Jailhouse Accommodation, Christchurch in the Oceania category. Meanwhile, Wake Up! took second spot in the best large hostel worldwide category (minimum 300 beds).

Wake Up! general manager Christian Millett said: “We have a well organised and very professional backpacking industry in Australia and these awards show that the quality of hostels really is world class.”

The Hoscars took place in conjunction with Hostelworld.com’s sixth annual Hostel Conference and was attended by more than 400 hostel owners, managers and industry professionals from around the world. 6. Just to clarify – The top hostels in Oceania and Australia were based on a minimum of 200 reviews being placed in 2009. The top large hostels worldwide needed to have a minimum of 500 beds and have had at least 300 reviews submitted in 2009. Properties have needed to work with us for at least 12 months before they are eligible for a Hoscar. Congratulations to all the winners!

  12. Looks like a great outcome for the hostels concerned and congratulations to the Winners. Lots of my favorite hostels didn’t make the cut, due to not meeting the 200 minimum vote requirement. Well done to the winning hostels. Hostel world don’t forget the smaller players as they are the core of your business.
