Golden Backpack Award winners revealed
The winners of the 2009 Golden Backpack Awards were unveiled at a gala dinner in Sydney last night.
A record 450 guests saw AFL legend and red meat campaigner Sam Kekovich and the event’s sponsors present 36 awards to the best of Australia and New Zealand’s backpacking industry, as voted by independent travellers visiting both countries.
Backpackers voted for their favourite hostel, tour and backpacker night in every State and Territory in Australia and across the Tasman. National awards recognised tour operators, transport providers and hostel booking engines while the general category saw awards for best travel agent, recruitment service and training provider. Awards were also presented for innovation and outstanding achievement in the industry.
The Golden Backpacks – run by TNT Magazine - are the only dedicated awards for Australia and New Zealand’s backpacking industry.
TNT Magazine Publishing Director Martin Lane said: “Each vote is put through a rigorous checking process to ensure fair play – we only accept votes with verifiable contact details so the Golden Backpacks really do reflect the will of the people.”

On behalf of the entire mojosurf staff base we would like to thank the industry for a display of how even in tougher times the little Aussie and Kiwi battlers in us all can still turn up in force and have a forget the past bring on the future night of fun, humor and reckless abandonment.
Thanks to the entire TNT team and the sponsors for bringing on such and event.
Sam the man was a real quiet achiever who opened up a little as the night went on to become a spokesperson for the Nation, possibly even the next PM. What a classic our table nearly wet their pants.
Thanks to our enthusiastic, passionate, very good looking and tireless team who are the most committed people who all love what they do and do what they love. Unfortunately we could not bring them all to celebrate but we will have to have a succession of after parties over the next 12 months. All invited.
Thanks to all of our awesome industry travel agents and partners for promoting the best tour/ activity in N.S.W and as far as surfing goes we are staunchly committed to providing the ultimate experience and always put our clients first in our focus of delivering the ultimate experience in a fun and safe environment.
And mostly thanks to the clients we all share that take on the challenge to travel half way around the world, contribute to our economy and society in so many ways. They are truly stars in our eyes, well behaved most of the time, adventurous, fun, educated and great to be around. They are truly great people and we need to remember to always treat them with the respect and enthusiasm we showed to them on the first day we opened our doors for business. We need to always remember and encourage our staff to be ambassadors to the industry as a whole, the country we are so fortunate to live in and for Sam the very funny dude at the awards night.
All the best to everybody in this awesome industry for the approaching summer, keep your yields up, treasure every client as the first one you ever had and i hope you all have a bumper season and make some money and have fun along the way. I know for the last 12 years i have been encouraging my team and saying this is going to be the year.
So lets make it that year, see you out there soon in the best region in the world.
Nat Folkes
MD mojosurf and mojosnow and Spot x.
All the best and stay busy.

We came to Sydney to find out what it takes to win a Golden Backpack Award, when our name was read out I was deeply humbled and very very happy. For such a young Company, to come so far in such a short period of time, tells me we must have the formula right.
A huge thankyou to all those involved and a special thank you to the people of Sydney who made our stay here so pleasant.
We are already looking forward to next year.

Last week was one of the most enjoyable, informative and rewarding weeks I can recall having since getting into this industry.
The BOA Chair and Secretary’s lunch was a great opportunity to meet our peers and discuss state issues in a relaxed and informal setting.
The conference was EXCELLENT and I urge anyone who is serious about growing their business to lock it into their calender for next year.
And the GPA’s , I’m still in awe and so proud of our achievement and congratulations to all the other finalist’s and winners . The quality and quantity of guests at the GPA’s is testament to the high value and recognition placed on these industry awards.
And what about that bus trip to The Side Bar……!
I also found the Expo a golden opportunity to network with other business operators and some exciting opportunities already developing. A real bonus.
An amazing week that’s for sure.
Thanks to Martin, Ian , Alice and Denise and the rest of the team at TNT, to Andrew and Malcolm at ATBE and to Peter Ovenden and the other Chairs/ Sec’s of the state BOA’s.
See you all in Tassie

Sorry I missed the week as I was away getting high at the time…trekking in Bhutan. Just curious how a company wins an award when the ACCC has taken action against them for misleading consumers? Oh no, not another ethics debate!
