Future of Lismore Transit Centre still unknown

The fate of the Lismore Transit Centre in New South Wales hangs in the balance following the local council’s recent rejection of the sole tender it received for the operation.

Greg Cross has managed the centre since mid 1998 when it was constructed as a hub for coach arrivals and departures and to provide locals and tourists with travel advice. His application for tender was the only one submitted in September of last year but was rejected with Lismore City Council suggesting the centre could remain unmanned.

The Northern Star reported last month councillors were due to meet on June 30 to discuss the future of the centre, but Cross said he was not aware of their decision and had been asked to stay until the end of this month.

“There’s going to be a big gap. Wiping me out is going to be a bigger disadvantage than it will help anyone,” he said. “We help people get from A to B, we’re where all of the coaches pull up and we operate from 6:30am to 6pm, which is a lot longer than what the Tourist Information Centre does. They open at 9:30 and close at 4.”

In early 1999, Cross became a travel agent to reduce council costs of maintaining the property. “I bought the fixtures of the building off the council when I became an agent but they aren’t selling them back to me,” he said. “There has been no negotiation with me.”

The council was unavailable for comment.

  2. I think this is a disgrace. Greg seems like a fantastic asset not only to tourism in Lismore but tourism NSW. We need more hands on operators like this in the Industry.

Have your say
