Bunk and YHA Brisbane take home Queensland Tourism Awards
Brisbane backpacker hostels Bunk and YHA Brisbane have taken home gongs at this year’s Queensland Tourism Awards.
Bunk Backpackers was awarded the prize for best backpacker accommodation on Friday night while YHA Brisbane received the new tourism development award following its launch in June of this year.
YHA’s new 376 bed hostel was converted from an existing 160 bed property and has been averaging occupancy rates of the mid to high 80s in the last few months.
“This award is an extraordinary but well deserved win for YHA, putting a stamp on the tourism map for the entire backpacking industry. YHA’s focus on exceptional standards, high-tech facilities, environmental sustainability and value for money have set a new benchmark for budget accommodation providers in Queensland and across Australia,” said YHA CEO Ralph Kajet.
This year’s award is the second for Bunk since its opening in January of 2004. It also won the award for best hostel in Queensland at the 2009 Golden Backpack Awards earlier this month, a back-to-back win for the 293-bed property.
Bunk accomodation manager Ben Schultz said, “The Bunk team is absolutely ecstatic about winning the 2009 Queensland Tourism Award for Backpacker Accommodation. We have a team of well travelled young individuals that are committed to enhancing the customers experience and promoting Brisbane and Fortitude Valley as a must stop destination for backpackers.”
