‘Brand Australia’ knocked off top spot in Country Brand Index
Australia has been knocked off top spot as the world’s best country brand, in the 2009 FutureBrand Country Brand Index (CBI).
After three years as the most popular country brand, Australia has slipped to third position and was overtaken by the USA in first place and Canada second. New Zealand came in at fourth spot.
While Australia slipped in the rankings overall, it was considered to have the best country brand to extend a business trip, for outdoor activities and sports and for one who desires to visit or visit again.
The Country Brand Index incorporates global quantitative research, expert opinions, and relevant secondary sources for statistics that link brand equity to assets, growth and expansion.
The study – which is in its fifth year – is run by brand consultancy FutureBrand in conjunction with PR agency Weber Shandwick.
“The days of countries marketing themselves with travel posters are over. Wise governments harness, propel and amplify their country as a brand, given it also encompasses culture, exports retail, real estate and of course tax revenue. The popular phrase says ‘tourism is too big to fail,’ but if no one is paying attention or if it is undervalued or taken for granted, the competition will benefit,” said Weber Shandwick Travel & Lifestyle Practice president, Rene A. Mack.
Rounding out the top ten best country brands were France in fifth place, Italy sixth, Japan seventh, UK eighth, Germany ninth and Spain tenth.
