Backpackers World to trial Website Travel point of sale system

Backpackers World Travel, the retail arm of Base Tourism Group, will be trialling Website Travel after its own point of sale (POS) system failed to meet expectations.

Group CEO Nick Thomas told Thumbrella today BWT’s self-developed POS system, rolled out in May last year, was performing well on the front end but was not completing administrative and back-end processes adequately. As a result, the company is looking at other systems before making further investment in its own.

“We may as well look at the alternatives before we bite the bullet and complete it,” Thomas said.

Website Travel will be trialled in three of the group’s hostels from next week. Thomas said the trial was taking place in hostels first as they tend to handle easier bookings such as day tours rather than the more complex itineraries handled by the retail chain.

Website Travel was developed by Peterpans Adventure Travel and is now used by more than 100 agents in Australia and New Zealand.
