Backpackers World GM departs in latest Base Tourism Group management reshuffle
Base Tourism Group has undergone a management reshuffle with the redundancy of Backpackers World Travel General Manager Jeff Skinner after six months with the company.
The group’s CEO Nick Thomas said Base director of business development Mark Sleigh will assume Skinner’s responsibilities and becomes director of commercial development for the holding company.
“The last year has been very operationally focused with the roll out of our new point of sale system and now we’re focused on getting people in the door, getting the top line moving and that’ll be Mark’s focus,” Thomas said.
He added: “The travel company has hit a pretty solid flat spot in the market so we’re trimming central costs and having more of a commercial focus.”
Skinner joined Backpackers World Travel in May following the axing of the Base Travel retail brand where all outlets were rebranded to Backpackers World Travel. Speaking of the move at the Adventure and Backpacker Industry Conference last week, Thomas said one travel chain was better than two.“ Best to have a go with one brand than two struggling brands.”

Afternoon All
Just to clarify Nicks quote from the conference last week.
Six months ago, we made the decision to change the travel brand which operates in our hostels from Base Travel to Backpackers World Travel. We felt that the BWT brand had greater equity in the market, and would receive a further boost by being rolled out through the hostels. Backpackers World Travel branding will be rolled out in all Base hostels for summer.
Its an exciting time for BWT, two new stores opening this week, some great new developments with the POS system, and a fantastic team looking forward to the coming season.
I look forward to catching up with you all before Christmas to celebrate a great year and look forward to it continuing in 2010
Regards
Mark
