Backpacker campervan companies in the spotlight again
Media scrutiny of backpacker campervan companies has continued this week, with a state newspaper reporting the breakdown of a vehicle on its website homepage.
The Northern Territory News reported yesterday that two backpackers were left stranded after their vehicle, rented from Tourism Holdings Limited (THL)-owned Backpacker Campervans, broke down due to “poor maintenance”.
The article, which alleges the fault was in the water pump, includes comments from the customer but does not include any from THL. The second paragraph reads: “The Northern Territory News last week reported about a Wicked campervan that had failed a roadworthy check – but it seems Wicked is not the only rental company to send cars on the road that break down.”
THL marketing and customer experience manager Kate Meldrum told Thumbrella the company was not contacted by Northern Territory News for comment.
She said the company was expecting and would welcome increased scrutiny of the sector following recent concerns over vehicle safety. She confirmed the breakdown was caused by a part failure. The company offered to pay for the backpackers’ accommodation while the vehicle was repaired but they chose to return to Darwin instead.

I work in the backpacker industry and that comment ” sending cars out on the road that break down ” is ridiculous. We do not intend for break downs to happen for our customers. Any car regardless if it is from a rental company or your own for private use there is no guarantee it will not break down!
It could happen to anyone!!!
